Reviving Sanskrit for Digital Literacy and Modern Skill Development

Sanskrit, one of the world’s most ancient and systematically organized languages, occupies a central position in India’s intellectual and cultural heritage. Beyond its classical and historical significance, Sanskrit embodies a rule-based, logical and highly structured linguistic framework that aligns closely with contemporary demands for digital literacy, analytical reasoning and modern skill development. In an era characterized by rapid technological transformation, artificial intelligence and knowledge-based economies, the relevance of structured thinking, formal systems and data organization has become increasingly significant. This article examines how Sanskrit can be revitalized as a valuable resource for modern skills by analyzing national policy initiatives, institutional frameworks and digital strategies that support its integration into contemporary knowledge ecosystems. 

The study explores emerging opportunities in computational thinking, digital content creation, artificial intelligence, language technologies, digital archiving and entrepreneurship, while also identifying structural challenges related to infrastructure gaps, capacity constraints, limited coordination and persistent social perceptions. Drawing upon policy documents, institutional practices and secondary literature, the article highlights how Sanskrit can contribute to employability, innovation and inclusive development in the digital era. It argues that repositioning Sanskrit within modern skill development frameworks allows traditional knowledge systems to interact productively with present-day technological and economic needs, thereby strengthening India’s knowledge economy and aligning with national education, skill development and digital transformation agendas.
